QSD Social news: The guard of the Calcutta MP transporting 10 elderly rickshaw pullers on the Ultorath

Kolkata: Kolkata Inspector Assistant Sub-Inspector Bapan Das, 45, pulled a rickshaw carrying 10 elderly rickshaw pullers through the city streets on Monday to celebrate the Ultorath Festival. He also presented them with sweets and clothes. Das, who currently serves as the police security officer for Dum Dum councillor Saugata Roy, has been providing pick-up and drop-off services for rickshaw pulters on Rath Yatra days since the past nine years.

During the Rath Yatra festival, he would drive them around his hometown of Siliguri. On the Ulto Rath Festival, he would do the same in Kolkata. “God dwells among men, and I believe in working for men.” While the nation celebrates Rajagnaath’s chariot, I carry those who transport people throughout the year, “said Das, who has been in the service for 24 years.
On Monday, he crossed Poddar Court, Lalbazar Street, Bowbazar and Burrabazar during his break to provide a pick-up service for rickshaw pullers.

For rickshaw pullers like Rameshwar Yadav, Babulal Roy and Zuber Ali, it was a completely different experience.
“People take pictures of us or hire us to take pre-wedding photos. But few people are willing to give us rides, “said Yadav, who has been pulling rickshaws in the Poddar Court area for 40 years.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Das dressed as Yamraai distributed masks and disinfectants, and organized the delivery of large amounts of food to the poor and needy.
